Only theory I've found that matches what I experienced was the glue used on voice coils could dry creating a dust sound very similar to typical bad coil. However if you're Salons have the ridged driver it will look a bit weird one with and without. Others had a ridge/indentation part way between the surround and of cone. When I purchased my used set of Salons and Voice initially thought they were 100% but, after several weeks, tracked an intermittent issue was hearing to the defect that plagued many most. These mid drivers.
See my other listing for a pair of NOS Salon 1 tweeters. Initially might only notice it if you pressed the driver and heard a light scratching noise. Unfortunately this usually would continue to get worse and could even result in the driver completely freezing. According to Revel/Harman the two are mechanically and conically same.
NOS Revel Salon 1 Midrange Driver REVEL4G-1 - Tested, Price is for the pair of tweeters shown in pictures. All of the high resolution pictures were just taken so they do accurately convey current condition. Luckily, for me, Harman still had a few of these left at the time and I received compensation from person that sold me Revels. I purchased the entire set with Salons, voice and whatever surrounds were called same mid in all.
I was told the issue resolved in later production runs of these and can personally confirm ones put my Salons one I'm selling now never had. Point of all this is that about the only way to test for this, in early stages, by lightly pressing on drive see if it sounds clean. It was, however, purchased directly from Harman and was never installed. I'm calling this New Old Stock because I've had it for probably 15 years or more.
